My First part of the ‘Transfer Update series’ and I hope it will help clear some light on a confusing time for Mark Ashton and co at BS3.
Free agents – two linked
Over the course of about a week, two strikers have been linked with a move to Ashton Gate, in Gary Hooper and Wilfred Bony. Ex Sheffield Wednesday striker Gary Hooper has been a name in the picture since fans heard the news of Benik Afobe’s ACL injury, which could keep him off the teamsheet for the rest of the season. At 31 Hooper would bring experience and solidarity upfront to a youthful Robins side. He also has a proven goalscoring record at Championship level and above. Wilfred Bony, however, is a slightly bigger name and has a higher reputation, but is as much an option as Gary Hooper, with wages being one of the only stumbling blocks for both of them. Bony plays at international level for Cote Divoire and has had spells at Swansea, Manchester City and Vitesse. He has many recognised qualities in front of goal and would prove a good signing, with the way he plays suiting Lee Johnson’s philosophy.
Centre backs – Wright and Williams
With Ashley Williams signing a 5 month contract in September after Tomas Kalas’ injury. Taylor Moore and Nathan Baker have also superb for the Robins, while Bailey Wright has remained injured (but is coming back to fitness soon). The Robins are therefore faced with a dilema as he has many inform or high quality returning centre backs, not forgetting Zak Vyner – who has been playing centre back for Aberdeen). Ashley Williams has also been linked with a January transfer move to Vincent Kompany’s Anderlecht. Bailey Wright also has clubs sniffing around him, with his contract running out at the end of the season and a question on game time.
